What is Islam?
An introduction to the Islamic faith
The Meaning of Islam
Islam is an Arabic word that means "submission to the will of God" and "peace." A person who believes in and follows Islam is called a Muslim. Muslims believe that there is only one God, called Allah in Arabic, who is the Creator and Sustainer of all that exists.
The Core Beliefs
Muslims believe in One God (Allah), His angels, His revealed books (including the Quran), His prophets (including Muhammad, peace be upon him, as the final prophet), the Day of Judgment, and divine destiny. These beliefs form the foundation of Islamic faith.
The Message
Islam teaches that God sent prophets throughout history to guide humanity. Muslims believe that Muhammad (peace be upon him) was the final prophet, and the Quran is the final revelation from God. The message emphasizes the worship of one God, moral conduct, justice, compassion, and care for others.
A Way of Life
Islam is not just a religion but a complete way of life. It provides guidance on spiritual matters, personal conduct, family life, business ethics, and social relations. The goal is to live in harmony with God's will and to contribute positively to society.
